RICK CARLINO
takes the F1 plunge
across the pond in his new
SURTEES TS9B

May - July 2006

TEAM-LCR REPORTS

Rick's new Surtees' first stop:
Simon Hadfield's UK shop for pre-race preparation

Rick Carlino recently acquired the ex-Tim Schenken - James Hunt Surtees TS9B (Hunt's first F1 ride). In fact, Rick bought the car sight unseen, except for a plethora of pictures and highly descriptive phone calls.

He then jumped on a jet, winged off to France, saw the car in the flesh for the first time and was promptly fitted to it by Simon Hadfield and crew on Friday. He practiced and qualified in the car on Saturday and raced it on Sunday.

Oh, by the way – all this happened in Monaco. The car came with an entry for the biannual Monaco Historic races.....

"The Historic Grand Prix is an exceptional event held every 2 years in Monaco. It follows the long tradition of Automobile sport in Monte-Carlo and enables viewers to participate at a race where some of the most unique and valuable cars in the world can be seen in action. This is the only event where antique cars can be seen racing on a F1 circuit. It is a highly prestigious occasion and enables guests to enjoy Monaco during a Grand Prix without the inconvenience of the logistical difficulties of the regular F1. The true devotees of today’s high tech F1 admit a great interest and debt to the past and to the motor racing legends of the last century."

Rick kept it between the barriers and off the curbs well enough to finish 18th – not bad at all! – having won the respect of fellow competitors for his sportsmanship and approach to his very first F1 ride.

Not satisfied with just the streets of Monte Carlo, Rick was then off to the really narrow streets of Pau in southern France for another Historic Grand Prix the following weekend. Now a little more comfortable in the car, he set about mastering the tortuous city streets of Pau. Again, a sensible, considerate approach paid off handsomely. Staying out of trouble, he again brought the car back safe and sound, with another trouble-free run. Well done Rick!!!

Pau, France
May 27 - 28, 2006

"The Pau Grand Prix is one of these exceptional events, one of these mythical places where some of the greatest legends of motor sport have been written. There are several reasons for this :

It has stood the test of time : Over 60 races have been held here since the first in 1930, and the event has always been able to adapt and so overcome all difficulties and obstacles. Furthermore, the circuit has not changed its layout since the very beginning.

Its history is intimately linked with motor sport : Did you know that the very first Formula 1 Grand Prix (aside from the World Championship) took place in Pau on March 29th 1948? That Pau was the first race to have been named "Grand Prix" (1901), the name coming from the horse races that used to be run there? And, finally, that it was at Pau that a certain Argentinean racing driver, Juan Manuel Fangio won his first race on the Old Continent there?

All the great names of motor sport have raced at Pau! Fangio, Ascari, Clark, Hill, Rindt, Stewart, to name just a few, joined more recently by drivers like Alain Prost, Jean Alesi and Michael Schumacher.

A most exceptional setting. This street circuit faces the Pyrenean mountain range, in an environment laden with a quite remarkable history."     from the
Grand Prix de Pau Historique website.
