"The New York Governor’s Cup for vintage Formula 5000 open wheel cars was won by Jay Esterer of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Esterer drove a 1973 McRae GM1 to a 0.604 second victory over second place Hamish Somerville of Vancouver in a 1974 Lola T400. Finishing third was Eddie Claridge, driving a 1982 Theodore Ty02.

Sixteen Formula 5000 cars took the green flag and Jay Esterer grabbed the lead of the race from the pole, but had a mirror full of
Somerville throughout the event. The average speed for the winner on the 3.37 mile road course was 108.89 mph with Esterer’s fastest lap clocked at 111.05 mph.

Somerville is no stranger to victory lane at Watkins Glen, as he has won the last three Penn Grade 1 Historic Grand Prix events at the wheel of his 1979 Williams FW07B Formula One car."
