All was fine through test day, practice day, qualifying and even Sunday morning warmup. Come the races, however, the gremlins began to arrive.

Hamish in the FW07 had the edge over Pete and Paul most of the weekend. Rick in the older Surtees had his own over the more recent Atlantic cars and the F5000s.

Having pulled out his usual small lead on the first lap, Hamish's FW07 got away from him at the top of the esses, and was not to rejoin the race.

Poor Rick didn't make the full extent of the pace lap, for on the way to pre-grid, the clutch pedal went straight to the floor. Making a valiant effort sans clutch, Rick coasted to a halt on the pace lap, unable to select any gears. (It ran fine in early morning warmup… just ask Hamish!)

Pete Gulick took full advantage of his inherited lead, but after a lap or so, pressure was brought to bear by Paul Flowers in the Tyrrell. He moved right up on the FW08's tail coming onto the front straight, trying to line Pete up for a pass. This looked ever more likely to happen as the 10-lap race wore on.

Then on the last lap, Paul's Tyrrell sputtered to a halt. Problems were later revealed in the fuel pickup system (no, he didn't run out of gas!).

Pete Gulick got his well-deserved first place.

"No surprise in the opening lap of the Monposto 70/Group 9 Mike Stott*UBS Sprint with the two Williams F1 cars leading the way, Hamish Somerville in the '79 FW07 and Peter Gulick in the '82 FW08. Rounding out the top three was Shelby Mershon's '97 Lola T97/20. The anticipated race between the Williams was not to be though, Somerville and Mershon were out on the first lap leaving Gulick out front. Second, now, was Paul Flower's in his second outing in his '83 Tyrrell with Travis Engen's '98 Lola T97/20 third. Gulick was marginally quicker than Flowers gradually pulling away, while Flowers, in turn was slightly faster than Engen. That looks as if it was going to be the finishing order, but on the penultimate lap, Flowers was out, Engen now second with David Porter's '79 March 79B third."  - Bob Harrington, SVRA Race Review

We had all four F1 cars together at VIR,
so we decided to indulge in a photo-shoot.
The backdrop couldn't have been any better, nor the weather.

So, we wrap up another great weekend. Maximum fun was had and the results were good. But they could have been even better.

Alas, luck was not with every car this weekend. The effort from drivers & crew alike was there. But the gremlins were running amok on Sunday. Will they follow us to Atlanta? Stay tuned.....

Before we drive off into the sunset,
a special thanks to our terrific crew:
Ed Barker,
Chuck Golder, Dean Jones, Mike Farka, Evan Wiehl,
and guest wrenches John Black and Bruce Lewis.

Well done all!!
