TEAM-LCR REPORTS

Pete Gulick in his FW08 Williams

Pete Gulick's Williams was fantastic, not missing a beat all weekend and running extremely competitively with, again, much more contemporary machinery.

He was, needless to say, cautious – as the Boss group is not known for its consideration of fellow competitors. As it turned out, their behavior on this occasion was flawless.  Pete had a great weekend competing with Joe Blacker in his 92 Reynard 3½-litre Formula 3000 (???!!) and a pretty, black Indy Lights car.

We had not geared the car for Atlanta specifically, and we all felt had we done so, it would have been good for at least two more seconds. The car was dramatically over-geared for turns 5 and 7, falling way off cam. However, Pete did really well and was more than satisfied with his performance, as were we all.

The 2-litre race that Pete, Hamish and Rick entered for the Jo Bonnier Cup (the championship Pete won last year, with Hamish second), netted a fine podium finish in 3rd place for Pete Hamish revisited the championship finish for this race by coming in second.  A great team effort – the only fly in the ointment being Joe's winning Lola.  Next time we'll have his measure for sure.

Way to go Hamish, Joe and Pete!

Hamish Somerville had joined both Rick and Pete in the Boss races. It was the March 782's first outing since its repair to straighten the chassis. Hamish felt the car to be back, better than ever. It was always superb; but, again, with some new suspension ideas and the proper rear wing, the car felt great.

Hamish gave the Champ cars, Lights and 5000 cars a really hard time and was faster than most – finishing well ahead of all but the better drivers of these quicker, more contemporary cars.  Another terrific effort!

Hamish and Pete joined forces in the Lola T70 for the Enduro.  Whilst the car is quite quick in its own right, it's still off the pace by a second or two of the more nimble 2-litre cars.  The Enduro race was not long enough for the T70 to take advantage of its strengths: the capability to go on for hours because it's so strong, and it's amazingly unfussy engine that will race for three or four hours without a problem – something the 2-litre cars have difficulty doing.  This race was a one-hour sprint race for the Lola T70.

Hamish took the first leg and was doing a sterling job, holding 6th or 7th place.

Pete had just got out of the F1 car in the previous race and really did not feel like driving, so he had us leave Hamish out as long as possible. Finally, Pete took over with 20 minutes to go. We had made some suspension changes earlier in the weekend, which only Hamish had tested. He liked the changes, but said they gave the car a completely different feel. This he conveyed to Pete, who got into the car with not just a little trepidation. However, on the first lap, he was almost 3 seconds quicker than Hamish's best. Obviously the changes suited his driving style ideally.

Pete continued lapping for the last portion of the race on the same pace as the much newer and nimbler cars, getting places back and finally finishing 4th. A truly superb effort! At the end of the day, all three of our Enduro pilots, Pete, Hamish and Rick, were pretty well exhausted, having had a huge amount of track time.

Hamish got yet another podium in the Group 7 race on Sunday afternoon.
Champagne seems to suit him.
