The F1 race got off to a really good start. Hamish kept his lead, extending it even on the first lap.

Paul Flowers was holding his position
and looking very comfortable in his
Tyrrell,
particularly for a first race.

Pete's pre-race tactical planning worked well. He got by Fitze in Turn 5 as he had planned and pulled out a little as they came by on the first lap. Now we had what looked certain to be our Saudia Williams team taking a one-two (and whoever might actually take the win would be just fine with us!).

Then the unthinkable happened:  halfway round lap 5, a straggler back-marker moved down on Hamish as Hamish was lapping him.

Totally oblivious to Hamish's presence, he just drove down into the FW07 whilst the cars were side-by-side, immediately putting them both out.

Pete took up the baton and pressed on harder than ever, as the lead group now had closed up and Fitze and Rick Knoop were breathing down hard on him.

Pete kept his head down, never making a mistake, finally crossing the finish line and taking the checker to secure his first F1 win!

So, we had a Saudia Williams 1-2, but not the two we planned!  A great finish and a great race for Pete and Mike, and another fabulous performance by our buddy Rick Knoop in his Tyrrell, not to mention Paul's performance in his first F1 race, coming home in 7th position.  Well done all!

Meanwhile, back in Europe, our friend and colleague, Rick Carlino, was having his own F1 success this same weekend at the French Grand Prix support race at Magny Cours. Rick finished 3rd and was treated to the same champagne celebration on the podium that the superstars would be enjoying on the very same podium the following day. Well done Rick in your new Surtees TS9B and on your third race sojourn to Europe!

Check out Rick's Excellent Adventure in Monaco, Pau and Magny Cours.

That's all folks!
